ALONG THE DANUBE
Water cycling along the Danube
“Water cycling” has a very special meaning on this special trip. You cycle and sail on this trip along enchanting river landscapes with steep forested hills, vineyards and orchards. Around the end of every afternoon you embark your sailing hotel again. During the day you cycle along the Danube and in the evenings you dine and sleep on board a nostalgic river cruise ship.
Your hotel for this trip is a former inland boat. Your ship has a lounge, restaurant with bar and a partially covered sundeck with (deck) chairs. You take breakfast, lunch and dinner on board the ship. On the cycling days you are given a packed lunch. If you don’t feel like cycling one day, you can simply stay on board.
The first day is a combined cycling and sailing day straight off. You cycle the first part downstream, to end up boarding again for the last part to Linz. The program for the evening includes an optional round trip by City Express through Linz (30 minutes).
The next day you can decide to take it easy and stay the first part of the stage on board. In Au you take to the bicycle for a ride through the idyllic hinterland to Grein, which boasts the oldest theater in Austria. On the way you ride through a Celtic village in Mitterkirchen and the romantic fortress of Clam.
Melk/Emmersdorf is the next destination. The splendid Benedictine tower in baroque style has been a spiritual and cultural center for more than 1000 years and is definitely worth visiting.
Then you get the best-known and probably the loveliest part of your cycling trip.
The part through the Wachau goes through a region with centuries-old vineyards, where various castle ruins remind one of former times. You board the ship again in the afternoon to sail into Vienna by boat. After dinner in the evening there is a round boat trip through this beautifully illuminated city.
Of course, Vienna is simply too big to discover in one day, but you can start the day with a bike ride through town (3 hours, optional) before visiting this impressive city at your own leisure.
The first part of the return trip will start after midnight. At about 9 AM you will be in Dürnstein where you have until lunchtime to visit the town. For the rest of the afternoon you can enjoy the landscape gliding by peacefully from your comfortable position on the ship. The evening promises folklore entertainment whereby you will see the crew as you have never seen them before.
All too soon it is time to disembark the next morning.
