Netherlands on a Bike & Boat Holiday
Why should you bother going to the Netherlands on a Bike & Boat Holiday? Isn't it a small, cold and densely populated country? Not entirely so. Holland is more than just tulips, clogs and windmills.
What can you expect when you embark on a Bike&Boat Holiday with us? A high degree of comfort, that's for sure. Virtually everything has been taken care of to make your vacation as pleasurable as can be.
A cycle day
Breakfast is at 8 o'clock. The daily distance is about 40 - 70 kilometers The route booklet describes the places where you stay at night. There are stops for exploring the many historic sights en route and for taking coffee- and lunch breaks.
Back on board tea and coffee are served. You can also use the minibar. After dinner you can go into town and end up in a nice Dutch darkbrown cafe. The ship never sails during the night.
Departure and arrival
For the Bike and Boat routes: boarding begins on Saturday at 16.00, followed by a warm-up bicycle tour. Departure for the first leg of the trip on Sunday morning at 09.00. The trip ends a week later on Saturday morning at 10.00.
The participants
On board you will find an international group of people of all ages and of varied composition: people travelling alone, friends, couples and (especially during the high season) families with children.
On board
A cabin becomes your hotel room for the week, with either 2-, 3-, or 4-berths. All cabins are provided with hot/cold running water and central heating. There is a small cupboard or shelves for your luggage.
Since 2002 the ships, used by Cycletours Holland, have been divided into five price/quality categories:
Comfort DeLuxe: A very comfortable and tastefully furnished 5-star ship/cabins with with a special salon and bar; cabins have twin beds (can be placed side by side) and air-conditioning; daily cleaning service; breakfast buffet, 4-course dinner.
Comfort: Cabins as StandardPlus but with twin beds; 3-course dinner
Standard Plus: Cabins with private shower/toilet (more spacious then Standard); bunk beds; 3-course dinner
StandardPlus: Cabins with private shower/toilet; bunk beds; 3-course dinner
Standard: Standard plus category however, cabins are a little less spacious.
Crew
The crew on board consists of a skipper, his mate and a cook. They are responsible for the smooth running of the ship. A (multi lingual) guide shows you the points of interest during the route and gives technical assistance. Naturally you can also cycle on your own. Maps are available on board. If you wish to stay on board ... no problem! That is what makes this formula so unique.
Meals
On 6 days the cook makes a dinner and a good cyclist's breakfast will be made for you in the morning. You put your own package lunch together during breakfast.
There is a good bicycle available for all participants that are eight years and older with 24 gears and handbrakes (Gazelle Medeo or comparable). Pannier bags are a part of standard equip-ment on each bicycle.
On request, we provide child seats and, for children between 4 and 8 (who like to cycle but might get tired before arrival on board), there are “slipstreamers” available. The bicycle is attached to the bicycle of the adult. The child pedals while the adult helps a little by pulling the bicycle. Children are required to wear the helmets that are provided with the children's bicycles. A tandem bike can also be provided if requested far enough in advance.
Bicycle helmet
Although wearing a bicycle helmet is not required in the Netherlands, we highly recommend doing so. (Helmets for adults are not included.)
